20-09-09 Tavistock U18s (50) v Plymouth Albion U18s (7)

Tavistock captained by Kirsty McCall went into their first match of the season with a lot of girls who have moved up from the under 15’s last year, with many of them not sure what to expect.
The home side were bolstered by three girls from Cullompton RFC, Kelly who played in second row and Paige, who played on the wing both had great games and helped themselves to two tries each.
Player of the match Elsie Kirby was outstanding at fly half, linking the backs and the forwards well and tackling bravely, scrum half Racheal Watson gave her plenty of options with some fantastic service.
Hooker Clara Nielson had her usual game, dominant in the loose and ferocious in the tackle, her work rate was high and she helped herself to a hat-trick of tries.
Beth Neave who had stepped up from the 15’s last year didn’t look out of place, with some great sidestepping and powerful running; she made several breaks and scored a superb try.
This really was a team performance and all of the girls played a wonderful free flowing game, off loading in the tackle was a feature of the play as well as a solid all round game.
New kicker Elspeth MacKellar wowed the crowd with 5 out of 8 shots at goal going over, all of the girls should be proud of a great performance, and look forward to a full season.

Tavistock Girls U'15 - 21
       Plymouth Albion Girls U'15 - 0

Tavistock opened the season, with two fine victories over teams they have been beaten by in the past. The opening game saw Tavistock run in 3 great team tries, catching Albion out with their ability to keep the ball alive in the tackle and improved fitness through a good pre-season with Doc. Notable performers on debut were Dawe and Rodgers, who were outstanding in attack and in cleaning up 50/50 ball. Tries came from Bull; who ran half the length of the pitch to touch down under the posts, after good link up play from McCall and Huntly and Upcott scoring her first try for Tavistock with some strong direct running!

Tavistock Girls U'15 - 7
Cullumpton Girls U'15 - 0

The second game was fought hard between sides of two contrasts. Cullumptons much larger pack made inroads in the Tavistock defence, but strong tackling from inparticular Cowie, forced many a turnerover. These turnovers led to Tavistock being quick on the counter and again catching the oppostion off guard. Play was sensible from the new U'15 squad, with only 2 line-outs conceeded in both games, correct decision making and ball carrying skills were apparent. Another debutant Hoare showed her potential linking well on the wing and showing signs of a natural finisher. Player of the Day was Cowie for her devastating tackling and knowledge of her position. A great start to the season for the girls and credit must be given for the excellent numbers at training and good attitude towards the game.

Taunton Girls U18s- 14
Tavistock Girls U18- 67

On a dry day, when fast flowing rugby was possible, the smart passing Tavistock girls ran through a lumbering Taunton team to score eleven tries. This entertaining game was played with 7-a-side and demonstrated the speed and agility that characterises the Tavistock play.
The Taunton girls looked big and tough against a Tavistock side with most players recently being transferred from the under 15. The step up is big, but captain, Kirsty McCall and coach Hammy Kerswill have already made them a force to be reckoned with.
The first plays of the match showed the forward strength of Taunton. They kept possession and recycled well. However, Jo Abel soon latched onto a loose ball, passed out and the ball eventually reached Beth Neave, who outpaced the defence to score under the posts. Elspeth MacKellar added the points for the first of her six conversions.
This was to be the pattern of play, with the Taunton forwards battling well in the loose, but as soon as they passed the ball out, Tavistock’s wall of hard tackling from Elsie Kirby, Kerry Walke, Beth Neave and Elspeth MacKellar awaited them. When the ball was spun out on the Tavistock side, smart inter-passing resulted in holes appearing in the Taunton line allowing the speed of the Tavistock backs to race through to score.
Rachel Watson at scrum half gave a magnificent display with some darting running from the base of the scrum, and Kerry Walke showing a quicksilver sidestep to leave the defence grappling at the air.
Cathy O’Boyle, worked hard against the strong heavier Taunton forwards and gave good service to the backs. However, the experience and skill of Kirsty McCall in marshalling the team, gave the Tavistock girls an enormous impetus to dominate this match throughout.
The next match against Exeter Saracens and Newquay on Sunday 11th October at Home will be a much tougher test.

Tavistock Girls U15 – 34
Taunton Girls U15 – 15

The new look under 15’s continued their unbeaten start to the season with a well deserved win away at Taunton. After a slow start, conceding the opening try, Tavistock woke up and took the lead with two fine tries from stand in skipper McCall, making the score 12-5. McCall continued to find holes in the opposition defence and was unlucky not to have a hat-trick of scores within 10 minutes, being denied her final try. The game was played at a good tempo with much of the ball being recycled quickly from good rucking by Tidball and Upcott. Tavistock also welcomed debutants Credicott and Rundle to the field both playing well in their first games. At half time Tavistock were leading but not comfortably, with the deficit at only 2 points. This was short lived however when Midson-Holmes and Dawe added to the score sheet from 20 metres out. Tavistock running home easy victors in the end. Player of the match was awarded to Bull for her vast improvement in defence, making countless tackles, leading to valuable turnovers.
